The rustle
Of the wind
In the trees
And the crisp,
Cool air,
Startle me,
And shake me
Back to reality.
This will likely remain one of my favorite poems I’ve ever written for quite some time. I struggle, sometimes, to convey my emotions or thoughts in concise ways, but I truly feel this poem doesn’t need a single word more to express its intention. It reminds me of such simple moments in my life, particularly on backpacking trips, where I was able to just sit and be truly calm.
Since my first backpacking trip, I’ve been in the practice of writing a letter to my future self while on out in the wilderness. There’s something about being far from civilization and lots of people that helps clear my mind and allows me to truly tap into my inner self. Meditation has always been hard for me since I’m so prone to distractions, but when I’m out in the woods its practically my default state.
I have the privilege of living in a small town in a valley surrounded by a mountain range filled with beautiful hiking trails. I’ve always lived in bustling metropolises, but have been longing for rural life as long as I can remember. I’d love nothing more than to one day be able to live on a homestead and grow my own food, take care of lots of animals, and lead a simple life in touch with nature. I’ll keep on working to make that dream a reality for as long as it takes.
How about you, lovely reader? Do you long for the outdoors or are you happier in the midst of lively cities? Where do you find inner peace? I’d love to hear from you!
